The Shield Counter is a Magic: The Gathering mechanic that's easy to misremember mid-game. Here's exactly what it does, plus a free on-screen tracker so you never lose count at the table.

What it does

Protects a permanent from the next instance of damage or destruction it would otherwise receive, then is removed instead of the permanent being destroyed.

Rules note

A shield counter only absorbs one damage or destroy effect before it's used up, so it doesn't stack additional protection beyond that single instance.
